The Van Nieuwenhuijzen family
In 1895 the farmers family Van Nieuwenhuijzen arrived in Ooltgensplaat, on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee, in the province of South-Holland. They started farming at Willemshof, located on the Galathesedijk (dike) in Ooltgensplaat. This farm stems from the early seventeen hundreds. At the time it was a mixed farm with both arable crops and cows. During the second world war the farm was torn down by the German occupiers because of the threat of an Allied invasion. In 1948 Willemshof was rebuild. Thereafter it became an arable farm focused on growing potatoes.
The current owner; Jacob Jan van Nieuwenhuijzen, succeeded his father Jaap on the farm in 1994 and thus becoming the fourth generation of farmers on the farm. Under his wings the business grew to its current size of 180 hectares with high quality arable land. Because Jacob Jan felt most at home in storing and marketing potatoes it was decided that all crop management was handed over to fellow-farmers and contractors in the area. In 2015 the company invested in a new potato storage for 3.000 tonnes. Jacob Jan and his wife Coby still live on Willemshof. Both their daughters and son are currently involved in the farm.
Galathea BV
In 1998 Jacob Jan van Nieuwenhuijzen started the potato trading company Galathea BV so he could market his Agria potatoes. The company name refers to the Galathea dike where the company is located. Galathea is a figure from Greek mythology. The trading company stores and sells not only its own produce but also markets the potatoes from co-operating growers. In nearly 25 years long lasting relationships were set up with buyers throughout the whole of Europe.
